Abstract

Mindful breathing has emerged as an integrative practice with growing scientific support in healthcare, particularly in promoting emotional self-regulation and reducing stress. This article presents a critical narrative review integrating neurophysiological, psychological, and clinical evidence on mindful breathing as a self-care strategy in clinical settings. Recent literature shows that slow and intentional breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, increases heart rate variability, and contributes to autonomic and emotional balance. The review also explores its impact on therapeutic relationships, its role in preventing burnout among healthcare professionals, and its applicability as a complementary intervention in various care contexts. Mindful breathing is concluded to be a relevant, accessible, and evidence-based tool to promote mental well-being and strengthen presence in care.
